Fort Magsaysay is Now Closed

As of Sunday, 31st May 2009, Band of Brothers Ltd. has closed the Fort Magsaysay Airsoft Gamesite. The game field remains "as is, where is" and may be used by other groups but Band of Brothers is no longer connected with it after the caretakers offered the site to another group. Band of Brothers Ltd. will continue to be part of the airsoft community but for the meantime will be busy with other projects.

Fort Magsaysay Airsoft Gamesite commenced operation in the first week of March 2008 and lasted for 14 months. During that time, Band of Brothers constructed three main forts and bunkers (USA, Philippines, and Iraq), as well as minor strongpoints ("Kubo," "Sari-Sari Store," "Banana Republic") using materials bought, transported, and constructed ourselves every week.

Thus when the caretakers of the property advised Band of Brothers that another group had been accepted as the renters and operators of the field, Band of Brothers had no choice but to dismantle the bunkers and barricades in order to let the new group have the freedom to construct their own game site layout and structures as they wanted. The materials were left on the site if the caretakers or the new group wanted to use them.

Message of Thanks

Band of Brothers would like to thank all airsoft players and the visiting public who patronized Fort Magsaysay Airsoft Gamesite throughout 2008 and the first half of 2009. We appreciate the various airsoft teams and individual players who played in and supported the games conducted by Band of Brothers at the field. We remember the great games played in both dry and wet conditions at this field and we hope our future games and events will be as memorable.

NEWSFLASH!!!!!

PNN(Pinoy News Network)

We have confirmed reports that 2 volunteer workers of the National Green Cross have been abducted and presumed kidnapped by rebel forces in a small village called Pandan in the outskirts of Niyugan City. While doing a medical mission for the children, the village was attacked at dawn by a group of 50 rebels believed to be connected with MPG (MGA PASAWAY GROUP) led by the notorious rebel leader General Electro Moto. It is believed that the group are now holding the hostages at the rebel base in the mountainous region of Mt. Talabsak. They are now demanding 50 million dollars as ransom and the release of their fellow rebels. If their demands are not met within the next 72 hours, they will execute the hostages and any hostile response of the government against the rebels will be met through ARMED CONFLICTS such as retaliation and destruction of government facilities and military bases.

Let's celebrate our 1st Anniversary on 08-Mar-2009!

Fort Magsaysay's first year of operations will be celebrated on Sunday, March 8th, 2009. Let's fellowship together and thank the God of Friendly and Honorable Wargames for a successful year of operations!

We've arrived, survived and thrived despite all the challenges encountered on our wide-open, windy, apparently bare-and-barren-but-challenging, often-wet, and very itchy grassy field. Players have learned to snipe, strafe, strike, and stalk in every nook and cranny of our forts and bunkers. There have been some spectacular knife kills and awesome quick kills plus a few massively multiple kills on our gradually undulating field of low grass. Congratulations to those who've accomplished those memorable firefights and skirmishes.

We've seen new and veteran players come and go. We've developed newby players into ferocious fighters, savvy hunters, and skillful stalkers. We've assembled random sets of lone wolves into fiercely loyal teams. And we've held our own despite rising costs, inclement weather, rapidly damaged or weathered bunkers and barricades, and the harsh challenge of some unwanted cheaters and ungentlemanly visitors.

Some players have lost gear while rampaging on the grass but they've found warm camaraderie and support from our steady group of loyal regulars and veterans who've taken the time to help them search and find the lost items.

Now it's time to celebrate and gear up for another year of innovative and heartpumping game play. Band of Brothers Ltd. invites all visitors and patrons of Fort Magsaysay Airsoft Game Site to come for a full day of non-stop wargames and combat scenarios. We'll exchange BBs and have fun. Snacks and drinks will be served while supplies last by the operators but we invite our visitors to bring and share some food and drinks with their fellow players.

Let's swap stories and adventure and have fun! See you on the field....

Game Fee Increase = P150 as of 01-Feb-2009

Due to rising administrative, logistics, and maintenance costs, the operators of Fort Magsasay Airsoft Gamesite, Band of Brothers Ltd., has decided to increase the individual game site playing fee. On 01-Feb-2009, the game fee per individual player increased from P100.00 to P150.00 for whole-day play.

Battery recharging shall likewise also be subject to a minimal recharging fee of P10.00 to P20.00 (depending on the battery capacity and/or charging duration). We're sorry, but we cannot continue to provide this service for free because the lot owner has started charging the operators for electricity use.

The organizers request the understanding and compliance of the visiting players to promptly pay the game fee so that we can continue to provide steady, regular, and exciting airsoft games for airsoft afficionados. Part of the fee increase will be used to develop and upgrade the existing gamesite features and facilities such as equipment, bunkers, barricades, obstacles, and game props so as to expand the repertoire of game scenarios and venues on-site.

Thank you to everyone for your continued patronage and support.

Team Black is Banned from Fort Magsaysay Gamesite

On Sunday, 11 January 2009, Team Black with twelve players committed a series of violations that forced Band of Brothers Ltd., the operators of Fort Magsaysay Airsoft Gamesite, to permanently ban them from playing as a team at the gamesite. Team Black started playing at Fort Magsaysay in March 2008 and have been returning to play every few weeks with from six to fifteen players. They have already played at least eight times at Fort Magsaysay from March, April, May, June, September, November, December 2008, and January 2009. However, their style of play has always been questionable with several complaints from marshals, other players, and spectators.

1. Team Black's usual violation is that nearly every member, and especially their team leaders, is a zombie player who rarely admits being hit. Opposing players and teams usually complain to the marshals that Team Black players almost always ignore multiple direct hits on their torso or any part of their body and that they never stop playing unless a marshal verbally calls them out individually. Even when a marshal stands beside a Team Black member and sees him being hit with multiple shots, he will continue playing unless the marshal tells him directly that he has been hit already. It used to be that only the veteran team members and team leaders acted this way but their new members who first played honestly and admitted hits voluntarily early in the year now do not do so. In June 2008, a playing marshal (Stinger) announced to all the Team Black players he will no longer play against one of the Team Black members because he kept ignoring multiple hits on his torso and still kept trying to shoot another player after already being hit.

2. Team Black's non-playing members and their inactive players watching from the sidelines usually coach active player members how to defeat their opponents on the field by pointing out positions of opposing players and giving advice to nearby Team Black members.

3. That Sunday, before they started playing, a marshal (DaGrinch) already warned the entire Team Black to play safely and shoot carefully because they would be playing against young teenagers. During the second game, they assaulted a base defended by four kids and 1 adult with a 2-to-1 advantage by standing up in the open, shooting non-stop and closing the distance to defenders. When the defenders had already been hit and had raised their hands, a marshal (Scalper) told all players to check fire and cease fire but Team Black continued to advance, overkill, and hurt their opponents. It was only after the marshal was forced to shout loudly to stop shooting and that the game was over, that the Team Black players ceased fire.

4. The marshals announced to the Team Black leaders that their players were in violation of the gamesite rules by ignoring the marshals' calls and by playing in an unsafe manner that hurt other players. This is what the marshal (Scalper) said: "Team Black, sinabihan na kayo na hit na yung kalaban nyo, na mag-check fire at cease fire, pero di kayo tumigil bumaril. Nakakasakit na kayo. Pag nag-complain yung ibang teams laban sa inyo, sige kayo." The Team Black leaders said nothing to the marshals. In fact, the other team that they had shot excessively wanted to stop playing already.

5. Team Black then packed up and began to leave the gamesite. They told the gamesite manager (DaGrinch) that they would not pay the gamesite fee. When another marshal (Scalper) asked the Team Black leader known as "Pong" if they had really decided not to pay the gamesite fee, he confirmed it. When the marshal forewarned him that this incident would be posted on the Web, he said it was okay with him.

Because of all their violations over the course of several months, after several scoldings and altercations with players and marshals, and after already giving Team Black several chances to upgrade their behavior and style of play but without improvement, and with this final incident of cheating, dishonesty, unsafe airsoft practices, unsportsmanlike and ungentlemanly conduct, insubordination and refusal to submit to the rulings of the marshals, and refusal to pay the gamesite fee, it is the decision of Band of Brothers to permanently ban Team Black from playing at Fort Magsaysay and on any other airsoft events or gamesites under its management.

This announcement will be posted on the website of Fort Magsaysay Gamesite and on various airsoft forum websites in the Philippines. Band of Brothers hereby reiterates its commitment to ensure safety, honesty, and fair play for all the players and visitors at their airsoft gamesite/s.

December 2008 Action Photos

With the reduction in rains during December, a larger portion of the game site became accessible to the players.

In addition, new barricades and bunkers were added at various strategic locations to provide improved game play and tactical movements for the players.

Attendance increased as more airsoft groups played at Fort Magsaysay regularly or as first-time visitors.

New Photos and Gamesite Events

From June to November 2008, Fort Magsaysay underwent steady changes as the operators added new obstacles and bunkers. The bunkers were moved around and strengthened to provide a variety of cover, concealment, and fields of fire.

Three forts were constructed, each with a different set of defensive barriers. The Iraqi base was located on high rocky ground that could overlook the assaulting forces except along certain concealed routes. The Philippine base consisted of low ditches and mounds, assorted barriers, and junk heaps. The American base had long bunker walls on flat grassy terrain to simulate the prairie forts of the Old West.

Players came steadily every weekend even as the weather turned wet with the rainy season. Players, like the Marines and Navy Seals, adapted to the rains and learned to play on the wet grass when the water became knee deep. We'd wait for the heavy rain to pass and then play during the drizzles. Everyone learned to have fun even while being showered by raindrops and BBs.

As the rains lessened and as the water receded, barriers were relocated and the style of play changed from stealthy movements to rapid rushes. Sniper wars erupted between the various forces as both long range gunfire and close-in assaults surged on the raging battlefield.

Squads learned to play with practiced teamwork and coordinated actions against their opponents. Assault knife kills became the spectacular goal of the experience players.

Airsoft is Fun for the Whole Family

Airsoft, despite being a wargame, is actually one of the safest sports around. Boxing, wrestling, full-contact martial arts, and even something non-combative sports like gymnastics can actually cause more physical pain and damage to health than airsoft.

In airsoft, physical contact between players is not allowed except as a form of "courtesy/simulated knife-kill" when a gentle tap by a player's hand means that the tapped player has been "stabbed or slashed" with a bladed weapon.

Thus the only thing that comes into contact with a player are the flying BB ammunition. If a player wears the prescribed protective goggles and protective clothing, he or she will not suffer any damage, except when shot at point-blank distance. Shooting another player excessively, especially at point-blank range, can get a player ejected from the game.

Another advantage of airsoft is that it allows men and women, as well as children and adults, to play against each other on equal footing. Each player just uses his physical agility and desterity to move his or her body in the right manner (aiming, avoiding hits, and moving around) but does not have to use superior strength to overpower an opponent.

Children do not need special consideration except that they should wear adequate skin and head protection and must be watched so that they won't remove their eye protection at any time. They can shoot just as well as the adults, and sometimes better. Women can display their higher level of agility and dexterity to offset the endurance and strength of the men.

Airsoft is a good way for siblings and cousins to have fun together as a group. They can learn how to play without causing pain or bad feelings on their peers. Airsoft also requires that the players show respect and honesty to each other by admitting that they were hit. If a player cheats, his or her peers will get to know it immediately. They and their elders can then mold his or her behavior using stricter methods so that teens and children will become respectable adults.

Despite being a "wargame," airsoft requires player to act as gentle and noble persons with great character and dignity or the activity will degenerate into an ugly brawl. Ungentlemanly conduct and unfair or dishonest play can easily be spotted and corrected as long as the players and the marshals are strict in enforcing the rules.

A day of airsoft, even if strenuous and tiring, can provide a higher level of excitement, a meaningful level of interpersonal bonding, and a deeper level of communication between friends and family members. Airsoft is not just good for the body, it's also good for the soul, but it also can become a good influence on the community, especially if it's values of honesty, fair play, and safety can be ingrained into everyday acts.

Basic Infantry Combat Tactics

To play an airsoft game, a group of players must "fight" another group of players to achieve an objective or prevent the other group from achieving their objective. Usually one group wins the game by eliminating the opposing group using a combination of firepower and maneuver tactics (this is called a "skirmish" or "death match"). Sometimes a draw or a minor victory can be achieved by preventing the opposing team from achieving its objectives.

Infantry combat involves either (1) attacking a group of players to eliminate them or (2) conquering and occupying a patch of ground to achieve a mission objective. A group of attacking or defending players must make the best use of protective terrain (cover), concealment, weather or light conditions, movement, proper timing, signaling, surprise, equipment capabilities, and firepower to eliminate their targets while trying their best not to be eliminated from the game.

Airsoft teams can be distinguished from each other by their type of uniforms or by wearing arm bands of different colors. The various players of a team must play in a unified or cohesive manner to be able to quickly achieve their objectives without losing too many players.

While individual players can act on a solo basis to help the team win, they are not as effective compared to playing in pairs as buddies. A solo player can do only one thing at a time and is vulnerable to fire from more than one direction whereas a pair of players have the following tactical options:
  1. both players can guard each other's blind side;

  2. both players can fire in different directions simultaneously or alternatingly;

  3. one player fires in one direction while the other member reloads, changes position, or keeps watch;

  4. one player can distract or suppress an opponent while another tries to decisively surprise the opponent;

  5. both players can outflank a single individual by attacking from different directions.
Usually, a solo player has cover only from one direction but is exposed to his flanks or rear. If a solo player is moving carefully or rapidly, he is usually not able to simultaneously observe what else might be happening or shoot his weapon. Thus three solo players who do not play in a coordinated manner can be eliminated by a pair of savvy players using good teamwork, tactics, and timing. If a player loses his buddy, he should temporarily join up with another buddy pair to help support them better.

Buddy pairs should not separate too far from each other so that they can easily talk or signal to each other. One buddy pair can team up with a second pair and conduct the same mutually coordinated tactics as listed above.

Groups of infantry fighters are usually built up by combining buddy pairs into larger groups. Thus a four-man infantry fire team is composed of two buddy pairs while a squad is composed of either two or three four-man fire teams. Larger groups can be easily built-up this way and given different mission objectives as needed.

The group that can "fix" (pin down) an opponent force from one direction and then hit them from the rear or at a vulnerable flank, and do it often or repeatedly, is the group that usually wins the battle. However, when maneuver and outflanking is difficult to conduct, the side with the more accurate and more consistent aimed fire and suppressive fire is the side that wins the firefight.

Changes to the Weekly Game Schedule

Weekend Night Battles

Fort Magsaysay can extend Saturday and Sunday afternoon games into the early evening at the players' request. Depending on the available schedules of the organizers, a weekend game can extend up to 8pm or 9pm. From sundown to the early evenig, you and your fellow nocturnal predators can roam the wide open field of Fort Magsaysay and hunt your opponents with BBs.

Night fighting at Fort Magsaysay is like fighting at twilight because it's not totally dark with light coming from surrounding houses or the well-lit sky. However, be prepared for close-quarters combat as your sneaky opponents try to use stealth in silent mode to try to "knife-kill" you. Be careful of making point-blank overkills!

Important Reminder: Each player should bring both "Dead Man's Rags" (red-colored cloths)* and blinker lights or flashlights to serve as hit indicators so you won't keep on getting shot by other active players after you've already been hit. Remember, shout out that you've been hit then place your dead man's rag on your head and/or turn on your blinker light. The organizers will be offering a limited number of blinker lights for rent if you don't have one.

[Creepy mode: Those who for one reason or another fail to indicate they've been hit will be provided with a freshly dug grave where they can sleep for the night until they join the ranks of the perennially undead.]

Please inform DaGrinch (cellphone +63-919-8696931) to inform him that you're playing on a Saturday or Sunday night, how many are playing with you, and what time you'll be arriving. Budget meals, snacks, and drinks are available with prior arrangements, so please confirm early enough or you might go hungry and thirsty.

* Dead man's markers or cloths were pioneered by the Action Games League in the Philippines and are a recommended means to immediately identify those already hit to prevent overkilling (excessive shooting) and possum playing (pretending to be already hit).

Weekend Play Starts in the Morning till Early Evening

During the summer, playing at Fort Magsaysay in the daytime had become similar to desert warfare. In the interest of avoiding heatstroke among the players, the organizers thus adjusting the playing time to start at 2pm. However, with the rainy season starting early, games can now start in the morning and continue all day.

Games will start on Saturdays and Sundays as early as 8am and end at around 6pm (this can be extended at the players' request). If some players would like to start earlier (from 6pm to 10am, for instance), please contact DaGrinch (cellphone +63-919-8696931) at least one day before so we can make special arrangements.

Please observe maximum gun velocity limits of 450 fps (using 0.2-g BBs) for AEGs. Night-time fighting offers more opportunities for CQB (close-quarters battle) so please be more safety conscious and avoid point-blank high-volume fire on opponents.

Weekday Private Games and Team-Building Activities

Do you want to play with your best set of buddies or with your club or workgroup? Do you want to use airsoft for team-building and to develop long-lasting camaraderie and fellowship? Now is your chance for everyone in your team to learn how to play airsoft and have fun at the same time.

Any group who wants to play its own set of private games may contact DaGrinch (cellphone +63-919-8696931) so we can block off a special day and time schedule for you from Monday to Friday.

If there are beginners or first-time airsoft players who will be joining, please tell them to bring the following:

  1. Long, rugged pants and thick long-sleeved shirts worn on top of shorts and T-shirts.

  2. Head and neck protection in the form of thick caps, balaclavas, hoods, helmets, shemaghs. or a dark-colored T-shirt wrapped around the head.

  3. High-cut outdoor shoes or boots worn with two pairs of socks to avoid foot injuries.

  4. Any type of gloves to protect against grass cuts and BB hits.

  5. Calamine lotion (Caladryl), insect repellent, sunscreen lotion, rubbing alcohol, soap, and any personal medication.
The minimum private game fee is P3,500 for 30 players or less. Additional players will be charged P100 per player. Please call ahead of time to arrange for equipment rental at P400 per player for an airsoft electric gun with one magazine load of BBs and one face mask or goggles. Vests can be rented at P100 for those who want to use them. Additional BB ammunition can be purchased on-site.

Airsoft Coaching and Tactical Training

All beginners will be provided with introductory briefings about airsoft. If needed, standard airsoft rules, basic combat tactics, and specific game mechanics will be explained by the game site marshals to all players.

Safety rules must always be followed to avoid serious injury to everyone. Honesty and fair play are required from all players at all times; violators may be ejected from a game and/or suspended from further play.

Regular airsoft players and teams who want to advance to the next higher level of airsoft play may request special training and coaching sessions under the guidance of our experienced tactical instructors. Please contact DaGrinch (cellphone +63-919-8696931) to arrange for a coaching interview to diagnose your needs and to arrange training schedule. Coaching fees will depend on the type of training provided at your request.
